Demagoguery is the method used by an orator or political leader to gain power by arousing people’s emotions and prejudices. We all know President Trump is a demagogue. His comments at a rally yesterday brought into sharp focus how he vilifies any group that dares to question him. And, of course, such rhetoric invites a corresponding response from those whom he targets.
John McCain sometimes was willing to work with the opposition to forge compromises that actually led to progress. But when each side demonizes the other, getting anything accomplished is virtually impossible.
